When Malaysian pianist Vincent Ong stepped onto the stage of the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, he wasn’t just performing for the judges — he was carrying the hopes of an entire nation. Known as one of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions, the Chopin Competition has long been a stage where legends are born. This year, Vincent made history as the first Malaysian ever to reach the final round, inspiring musicians back home and proving that talent and determination can take you anywhere.
Held every five years since 1927, the International Chopin Competition is often called the “Olympics of piano.” Its winners include some of the greatest pianists of all time, from Martha Argerich to Krystian Zimerman. Simply qualifying to compete is an honour — but reaching the final? That’s a milestone few achieve.
Vincent not only reached the final but also secured joint Fifth Prize, performing with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in front of an international audience. His sensitive phrasing, refined tone, and emotional depth in Chopin’s works won over both the jury and the public — earning him second place in the Audience Award poll, a testament to his artistry and charisma.
During the competition, pianists performed on a selection of top-tier concert grands — among them the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX, Kawai’s flagship handcrafted piano. Known for its singing tone and responsiveness, the SK-EX continues to be a favourite on major international stages, including the Chopin Competition.
