Released just 2 years after the birth of the TAMA brand, Superstar drums were dynamic and powerful, laying the groundwork for the future of TAMA’s sound. Now, almost 50 years later, the original Superstar drums have been revived as a Limited Edition model to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of TAMA Drums.

Superstar was the world’s first drum kit to utilize an all-Birch shell, producing the perfect sound for the emerging genres of the time – a sound that captivated the top drummers in the world. The groundbreaking 6-ply/9mm shell design was crucial to Superstar’s monumental success. Thicker than modern drums, these shells achieved powerful attack and deep low end. Honoring TAMA’s 50th Anniversary, the original shells, period-correct shell hardware, and matching interior finish deliver a faithful reproduction of the original Superstar.

All Birch Shell (9mm, 6ply)

The original Superstar was a watershed moment in drum-making — the world’s first kit built entirely from birch. At 6-ply/9mm, the shells are noticeably thicker than what you’d find in modern production drums. That extra thickness translates directly into tone: powerful attack up front, a fat mid-body, and a deep, authoritative low end. This reissue uses the exact same shell formula, so what you’re hearing is the same sound that defined a generation of drumming in the 1970s.

Original Superstar Reissue Badge

The classic T-shaped TAMA emblem has been reproduced to exact original specifications — a small but meaningful nod to the kit’s heritage that collectors and longtime TAMA fans will immediately recognise.

REMO® AMBASSADOR Coated Drumheads

Every detail was considered, including the stock heads. The toms come fitted with Remo Coated Ambassador on both batter and resonant sides, while the bass drum features a Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 on the batter and a Coated Ambassador on the front — all in a commemorative 50th Anniversary version of the vintage Superstar logo.

Period-Correct Hardware

The lugs, claw hooks, and T-shaped TAMA badge have all been faithfully reproduced to the original Superstar’s specifications. The bass drum even uses a T-handle tension bolt — just as it did on the vintage kit. These aren’t modern approximations; they’re accurate recreations of the hardware that defined the Superstar’s look.

MTH800 Double Tom Holder

A modern update for practical playability — the MTH800 double tom holder offers independent left and right adjustment for a wide range of positioning, and can also be split for use as a single tom holder.

Iron Cobra Hardware Kit (HB5W)

The bundle includes the HB5W hardware kit — HP200P Iron Cobra 200 single pedal, HH205 Iron Cobra hi-hat stand, HS60W snare stand, and two HC63BW boom cymbal stands. Reliable, road-tested Iron Cobra hardware to match a kit of this calibre.
