Designed as a high-performance replacement for traditional Strat-style single-coil pickups, The Chopper combines the clarity and definition of a single-coil with the added body, warmth and output of a humbucker.

Introduced in 1994, The Chopper was developed as the louder, more aggressive counterpart to DiMarzio’s Fast Track 1. Its carefully balanced voicing places greater emphasis on the low and midrange frequencies, producing a fuller, more muscular sound that works particularly well for rock, blues-rock, fusion and modern guitar performances.

One of its defining features is its dual-blade humbucking construction. Unlike traditional Strat pickups that use six individual pole pieces, The Chopper features two continuous metal blades positioned beneath the strings. This design helps maintain a consistent response during string bends and avoids the string-alignment concerns associated with conventional pole-piece arrangements.

Equipped with a ceramic magnet, The Chopper delivers strong attack, controlled bass and an expressive midrange. Its manufacturer-rated 260mV output offers substantially more power than many vintage-style Strat pickups while retaining excellent clarity and musical responsiveness.

The Chopper’s sound sits between a traditional single-coil and a full-size humbucker. It produces more body and warmth than a conventional single-coil while offering greater openness and definition than many full-size humbuckers.

In the bridge position, The Chopper is particularly effective for adding weight and punch to guitars that otherwise sound thin or overly bright. It delivers crunchy rhythm tones, clear lead passages and a strong response to overdrive without sacrificing individual note articulation.

Although originally developed for bridge use, DiMarzio recommends The Chopper for all pickup positions. It also works especially well in the neck position when paired with a higher-output bridge humbucker, providing warm, expressive tones with enough clarity for fast melodic passages.

Its side-by-side humbucking coils cancel unwanted electrical hum, making it an excellent choice for players who want Strat-style pickup dimensions with quieter performance than a traditional single-coil.

The pickup features four-conductor wiring, supporting alternative switching arrangements such as coil splitting and parallel humbucking when installed with compatible electronics. Its passive design requires no battery.

For a balanced Strat-style configuration, pair The Chopper with two Fast Track 1 pickups, or use a Fast Track 1 in the neck and a Cruiser Bridge (DP187) in the middle.

Available in Aged White (DP184AW), Black (DP184BK) and White (DP184W), all three variations share the same electrical design and tonal performance.
