Sound Development in Collaboration

Casio collaborated with C. Bechstein to develop the Berlin Grand sound for the CELVIANO Grand Hybrid. By studying Bechstein’s D282 masterpiece, Casio aimed for a clear, balanced, and elegant tone. Mr Albrecht, C. Bechstein’s Service Director and Master Piano Maker, supervised the final sound development process.

AiR Grand Sound Source (Acoustic & Intelligent Resonator)

The CELVIANO Grand Hybrid, featuring the AiR Grand Sound Source, offers natural sustain for beautiful chord resonance and sensitive expressiveness for pianissimo. It includes Multi-dimensional Morphing for smooth dynamic changes and an Acoustic Simulator to replicate grand piano characteristics, ensuring an authentic piano experience.

Multi-dimensional Morphing

On an acoustic grand piano, the volume and quality change from when the keys are struck until they die away. Casio’s Multi-dimensional Morphing technology enables natural, smooth transitions in sound volume and tone based on the power of the keystroke. This technology contributes to more expressive performances.

The CELVIANO Grand Hybrid features String Resonance to capture harmonic relationships between strings and Damper Resonance to replicate the effect of the damper pedal. Casio’s Resonance System ensures authentic reproduction of a grand piano’s string and soundboard resonance based on performance conditions.

[ Action Sound System ]
Casio’s CELVIANO Grand Hybrid simulates the mechanical sounds of a grand piano to enhance realism. It includes three types of operating sounds, each with independently adjustable volume or the option to turn them off.

[ Key Off Simulator ]
Casio’s Key Off Simulator controls the length of lingering sounds based on key release speed, providing a natural decay. This allows players to express delicate nuances in staccato and legato.

Casio’s CELVIANO Grand Hybrid subtly varies sound timing based on the keys played, even when struck with the same force. Each of the three piano tones has optimal settings, and the sound production timing can be adjusted to suit the player.

Grand Pedal System

Casio’s Grand Pedal System fine-tunes damping volume and note length based on pedal depression. The Half Pedal Position function adjusts when the damping effect engages, according to the player’s preference. For soft pedal use, it offers natural volume and sound changes, allowing a wide range of expression when playing softly.

Grand Acoustic System

The CELVIANO Grand Hybrid’s new speaker system enhances dynamic expression from low to high notes with upgraded downward-facing speakers and improved bass. The four-channel audio system, featuring six strategically positioned speakers, replicates the sound field of an acoustic grand piano, offering powerful and balanced sound.

Adjustable Lid Position & Lid Simulator

The CELVIANO Grand Hybrid features a top panel that can be manually adjusted, affecting the sound from the upper speakers and working with the “Lid Position” setting to mimic an acoustic grand piano’s lid. The Lid Simulator digitally replicates the acoustic effects of varying lid positions. Pianists can choose from four lid settings to customize their piano sound.

Hall Simulator & Listening Position

The Hall Simulator includes twelve types, each replicating the acoustics of famous concert venues. With four Listening Position settings per space, pianists can simulate hearing the piano from different audience perspectives.

Volume Sync EQ

Volume Sync EQ ensures a pleasant playing experience even at low volumes by balancing sound quality in the low and high registers, making it ideal for quiet playing at home.

Headphone Mode

Headphone Mode enhances the headphone experience by creating a spacious sonic image, replicating the feel of playing an acoustic piano and allowing pianists to enjoy a natural sound field.

Casio’s “Natural Grand Hammer Action Keyboard” offers an authentic touch with full-length wooden keys and hammers mimicking a concert grand piano’s motion. The CELVIANO Grand Hybrid uses the same materials as acoustic pianos, with meticulous attention to key finish and wood quality, enhancing the playing experience.

1. Original Tri-Sensor action mechanism
Casio’s proprietary action mechanism in the CELVIANO Grand Hybrid includes a grand piano-style hammer movement and three sensors to capture key expressions. Without physical strings, this action exceeds traditional performance, allowing easy trills and repetitive notes.

2. Keyboard surface materials
The use of acrylic for the white keys and phenol for the black keys — the same materials that modern grand pianos employ. This creates a welcome and familiar touch. Pianists will feel comfortable and confident on the keys of CELVIANO Grand Hybrid.

3. Fulcrum distance from keys
The fulcrum position in the CELVIANO Grand Hybrid is identical to that of a grand piano, ensuring stable touch and consistent playing performance regardless of where a key is struck.

The keyboard is constructed using Austrian spruce of the finest quality. Careful attention is paid to the drying and processing of this high-quality material before keyboard construction begins.

The keyboard is designed for superior performance by independently considering each of the 88 keys and their collective function. Attention to load changes and key return speeds ensures perfection.

Beyond simply detecting the overall force of a key being played, the entire travel of the key is precisely modelled after the behaviour of a grand piano

Its mechanism follows the motion of a grand piano’s hammer action, visible through a clear panel when the lid is lifted. This action allows faster note repetition than acoustic pianos while maintaining a true piano touch.

[ Natural volume changes and wide expression ]
The GP-510BP and GP-310BK/WE are designed for precise dynamic control, simulating the finger pressure changes of a grand piano. They allow natural volume control of Pianissimo to Fortissimo, through simulations and adjustments, similar to an acoustic grand piano.

[ Precision keyboard return speed ]
Casio’s research on grand piano key return speed has resulted in a keyboard action with consistent return speed and stable responses across the instrument.

[ Concert Play ]
The Concert Play feature lets pianists experience playing as a soloist with a full orchestra, with 15 built-in pieces. It offers playback functions such as play, pause, fast-forward, rewind, A-B segment repeat, and Slow Mode to reduce the tempo to 80%.

Versatile features

Audio Recorder
CELVIANO Grand Hybrid pianos can record performances on USB flash memory as stereo .WAV files (44.1 kHz). Recordings can be stored, played back on a computer, or transferred to CDs and other media. The piano’s playback functions include pause, fast-forward, rewind, and A-B segment repeat.

MIDI Recorder
This function lets players freely record their performances in the CELVIANO Grand Hybrid’s memory, aiding skill improvement through objective review. It includes playback features like pause, fast-forward, rewind, and A-B segment repeat.

Music Library
The CELVIANO Grand Hybrid’s Music Library features 60 piano pieces with included scores. Ideal for learning, players can practice hands separately, adjust tempo, and use A-B segment repeat. Each piece has a preset tone, but players can choose from Berlin Grand, Hamburg Grand, and Vienna Grand tones.

Duet Mode
Duet Mode allows the keys on both sides of the keyboard to have the same tonal range, making it convenient for two players, like a parent and child or teacher and student, to practice together.

Layer and Split
The layer function enables pianists to overlap two types of tones, while the split function lets them separate tones into lower and upper blocks.

Auto Power Off
To conserve energy, the CELVIANO Grand Hybrid will Automatically Power Off when the instrument has not been played for 4 hours.

Ergonomic Interface
Intuitive control of the CELVIANO Grand Hybrid is possible through a simple, considerately designed control panel. The Berlin Grand, Hamburg Grand and Vienna Grand are easily accessed with dedicated buttons for each piano tone.
