Introduced in 1994, The Cruiser Neck was developed to provide an open, vocal-like midrange and balanced frequency response while retaining the familiar appearance of a Strat-style pickup. Its carefully tuned construction makes it particularly suitable for blues, rock, fusion, pop and expressive instrumental guitar playing.

One of the pickup’s defining features is its side-by-side dual-coil design. Unlike traditional single-coils, The Cruiser Neck features two continuous metal blades positioned beneath the strings. This hum-cancelling construction minimises unwanted electrical hum while maintaining consistent string response during bends and expressive playing techniques.

Equipped with a ceramic magnet, The Cruiser Neck delivers clear attack, excellent articulation and responsive dynamics. Its manufacturer-rated 140mV output provides a balanced sound that retains traditional single-coil brightness while adding greater fullness to the lower strings.

The pickup’s tonal character is especially well suited to neck-position playing. Its unwound strings produce crisp, articulate notes similar to those of a traditional single-coil, while the wound strings have a slightly thicker response. This creates an open, balanced sound with excellent separation between bass and treble frequencies.

Another distinctive feature is its reduced magnetic string pull. DiMarzio designed The Cruiser with approximately 40% less magnetic pull than standard single-coil pickups, helping the strings vibrate more freely. This allows the pickup to be adjusted closer to the strings for additional output without excessive magnetic interference.

With clean amplification, The Cruiser Neck delivers sparkling chords, smooth melodic passages and a lively, expressive response. Under overdrive and distortion, it retains clarity and definition, making it suitable for guitarists who regularly use high-gain amplifiers or multiple effects pedals.

Designed primarily for the neck position of compatible six-string Strat-style electric guitars, The Cruiser Neck also works well in the middle position when paired with a higher-output bridge pickup.
